POSE IDEAS FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Take a look at these before your shoot to get those creative juices flowing!

Photo Tip: CONVERT TO A BEAUTIFUL B/W

Digital Photography Boot Camp by Kevin Kubota

Reset your Color Swatches to black over white (press D on your keyboard).

Add a Gradient Map adjustment layer to a color image.

Click in the gradient area to bring up the Gradient Editor palette.

Put your cursor just under the center of the gradient. Photoshop will give you the finger when you have it in the right place.

Click to set a color stop.

Double-click on this color stop to open the Color Picker.

In the Lab section, enter 54, 1, 6, respectively. This gives a warm-tone black & white. For slightly less warmth, use 54, 1, 4. For a completely neutral black and white, use 54, 0, 0.

Click OK.

In the Gradient Editor you can adjust the overall tonality by grabbing your new color stop and dragging it to the left. Notice how the midtones and highlights open up without losing detail. The image has a nice "pop" to it, and the shadows stay deep. Try setting the Location amount to 42 percent for starters.

Fine-tune the overall contrast by adjusting the Smoothness slider. Values less than 100 percent effectively lower the contrast.

Photo Tip: SET WHITE BALANCE

Digital Photography Boot Camp by Kevin Kubota

Make sure your eyedropper is set to 31x31 Average. Also, go to Preferences>Display & Cursors to make sure you've selected Precise under Other Cursors.

Open a Levels adjustment layer.

Press Shift and click on the image to set a neutral sample point. Be sure that the sample point has image detail (no blown-out white spots). The RGB values in your Info palette should all be between 50 and 200 for this point.

Double-click the white eyedropper in the Levels dialog box to open the Color Picker

Position your cursor just over the sample point on the image so that it disappears, indicating perfect alignment with the sample. Click once.

In the Color Picker, the top swatch will indicate the color of the area you've clicked on. The color cast may be more obvious now. Set your "a" and "b" channel values to O (in the Lab boxes).

Click OK to close the Color Picker dialog box.

Click again on the same sample point in the image, The color cast should disappear.

Match the mountains on the histogram, if needed, then click OK.
